Sony VPL-HW40ES Projector Review: Blacks are the New White – Gadget Review

Sure, Sony’s HW40ES can be hailed for its ultra low fan noise. But that’s not all. It also produces a stellar picture thanks to Sony’s Reality Creation tech that truly makes images pop. Fold in exceptionally rich blacks despite not boasting an iris and it begs the question of how the HW40ES costs so little.

Tip: Combine it with Screen Innovations’ 5 Series motorized slate screen – which we did – and you’ve got a home cinema that perceivably exceeds any movie theater.

I would give up my 1st born child over giving this projector up. It is absolutely amazing!

Sweeney Bro says:

so if i use it just like a normal TV will i be replacing lightbulbs a lot?

Assad Niang says:

Nice review, thank you!

Pipelyon says:

I love my 40ES after many years. It’s got 2500+ hours on original bulb , shows on a 12 foot wide Da lite High Power 2.8x. Much brighter than the VW60s’ I’ve owned and the VW85.3D is great ,  wish Sony made a 4K version.

mancsakacarl says:

I love mine , give it a week to settle , spend time getting panel alligment perfect with zone and use avforums settings for movies , adjust reality and sharpness to preference, just mind blowing.

This and That says:

Great review! My friend owns this same projector and it’s crazy good. I’m planning on buying one for myself this week – I found an authorized dealer at

Alguien que me diga una sola cosa, vale la pena este proyector?

MrSuperman258401 says:

Video was nicely done, love to see you do more project reviews. Love to see what you think of the celluon picopro pocket size laser projector. Also the LG new Pf1500 and Acer H7550st that both have Bluetooth audio out.

Andrew D says:

Whats the advantage of a projector over lcd tvs?

Matt Gonzalez says:

Great review! I have a somewhat similar Sony projector in my home theater and love it.

nicole wins says:

Is this a huge upgrade from an optoma HD20?

TVperson1 says:

Does it have any screen door? I’d prefer not to have that issue.

eliran gibli says:

Amazing Wow

zeus1117 says:

Hey, i noticed the stand you made for the projector. What are the dimensions ? I already made mine but with 60 *40 cm it is of course a little short. Still might be fine. I like that yours has height adjustment option, maybe i will also switch my support brackets.

Leo Ontiveros says:

Cool vid man, I’m confused about getting a projector or not, don’t you feel like the colors are not as saturated as on a TV?

Zexalin X says:

Great review man. I’ve been extensively researching the 40ES and I think I’ve finally decided on it.

Joel Alexander says:

Where did you buy your shelving from if you dont mind me asking ? My HW40es is being delivered next week and I think this is the best mounting option for my room.
